Family Learning and Parenting

Family Learning courses and activities encourage families to learn together to gain new skills in a wide range of subjects. Families include parents, carers, grandparents or other adult relatives and children. Some courses are for parents or carers on their own to help them develop their skills to be able to support their children?s learning and development. Most Family Learning courses are free. Family Learning activities are run in adult education centres, community venues and schools throughout Waltham Forest and throughout the year.

Free parenting courses help you make the most of your family life and your relationships with your child/children whatever your age or their ages. Courses enable you to develop ways to listen to your children and to deal with difficult behaviour so that you can enjoy the role of parent/carer. Carers who undertake the role of parent are also very welcome to attend.

Family Literacy, Language and Numeracy

These courses are for family members and carers of school age and pre-school/nursery children. The courses are designed to help adults develop their own reading, writing, spoken English and maths skills, and to explore ways of helping their own children with schoolwork. The courses are mainly run in schools, pre-schools and nurseries. Family Literacy and Numeracy courses running in CLaSS centres are listed below; you can pre-enrol or attend the first session. Parenting

Opportunitities to develop confidence as a parent/carer in Britain today.

  • Short courses of 10 hours.
  • Long accredited courses for 30 hours.
  • Courses are free and certificates of attendance are available.

Family learning class

  • Look at different ages and stages of development
  • Find ways of developing a more positive relationship with children.
  • Encourage better communication.
  • Sessions to find out about ways to support children starting school or changing from Primary to Secondary School.
  • Share information about how children grow and learn and what to expect at different stages.
  • Consider ways of supporting children to develop their emotions and bodies in a healthy way.
  • Courses for new arrivals to London to find out about local activities.
  • Handouts available and websites to use.
