Higher Education Introductory Studies

CLaSS Learner

Have you always wanted to go to university but thought you never could? This programme helps you to return to study if you have not been in education for some time. You do not need GCSEs, NVQs or A Levels. This programme helps you to develop your skills and confidence to continue your studies at degree level either at Birkbeck or at another university in the UK.

When you successfully complete four modules from the programme you will get a University of London Certificate of Higher Education.

Starting in September 2009 at Chestnuts House, 398 Hoe Street, Walthamstow, London E17 9AA

The programme is particularly helpful if you are interested in working towards careers in:

  • Social work
  • Teaching
  • Nursing or Health
  • Local or national government

Approaches to Study

This module gives you the opportunity to develop your study techniques and speaking and writing skills. You will try out different approaches to learning. You will discuss new ideas to help you with your studies. . This course includes education, health and contemporary social and cultural issues.

Sociology

How can Sociology contribute to our understanding of the lives of individuals and communities in society today? You will study how power and inequality affect identity and culture.

Career and Professional Development (half module)

This module can be studied as part of the Certificate of Higher Education or as a module on its own. Topics include developing a personal action plan; writing an effective CV; job and course applications and interview skills.

Foundations of Modern Psychology

This module offers an introduction to psychology. You will explore key theories and approaches in psychology and how these are applied in everyday life.

Research Methods for Psychology (half module)

This module offers an introduction to a range of research methods and the role of statistics in psychology. You will complete a research project as part of your coursework. Before enrolling on this module, you must have completed, or be in the process of completing, one of the other modules that counts towards the Certificate of Higher Education.

Independent Study (half module)

This Independent Study half-module gives you the opportunity to research a topic related to your studies on the Higher Education Introductory Studies award. You will have tutorials in which you will learn how to plan, develop and edit your writing.
