Community Life - Become Involved!

Waltham Forest Council is running a women together initiative aimed at encouraging more local women to get involved in civic life. Find out more about this here.

Comments from the Calligraphy Course

A new learner said she had never been allowed to use a pen with ink at school as she was left handed and as she wrote it would smudge the page, now she is writing script in ink for the first time, previously she only wrote in blocks.

Another improver had told us of her grandson’s stroke at the age of 8 making him unable to write, and her knowledge of holding a pen and writing in different styles had facilitated her in helping her grandson hold a pen and write with his left hand.

ESOL Learners

Learner Ewa Tymczyszyn has made enormous progress. Ewa started ESOL classes with CLaSS at Entry 1, 4 years ago and has now successfully completed ESOL Level 2. She has shown great commitment and enthusiasm throughout her studies, as well as having a second baby and looking after her young family. Congratulations.

Nasreen Ahmed has been going to an E3/L1 English class at Friday Hill House for about six weeks. She joined the class because she wanted to be able to understand and express herself clearly at meetings with professionals about her son’s care, as he has severe special needs. She has a natural feeling for the rhythms of poetry. Read Nasreen's one of Nasreen's poems here.

CLaSS Crèches registered with OFSTED

There were changes to the way childcare is registered with OFSTED from September 2008.

There is an Early Years Register and a Childcare Register with compulsory and voluntary parts.

Compulsory Part

Childcare providers must join this register if they care for children who are older than the Early Years Foundation Stage group but who are under eight.

Voluntary Part

Some types of childcare providers are not required to register, but can choose to do so.

These are:

  • care providers who work in the child’s own home, such as nannies
  • activity based settings, such as sports clubs
  • short term care, including some crèches
  • care which is only for children aged eight and over.

For CLaSS crèches this means the crèche at Leytonstone Learning Link, Friday Hill House and William Morris Community Centre are registered under the Voluntary part.

Crèche – Exciting News!!

A new playground, funded by CLaSS, for children using the crèche at Leytonstone Learning Link was opened in September 2008. Children from the crèche have sole access to the enclosed purpose built playground at the back of the building.

Children at a creche

The playground has suitable and appropriate outdoor play equipment. There is a soft rubber ground area, a sun canopy to protect the children from direct sunlight and sufficient space where children can gain confidence in physical activities while developing their control and coordination skills.

New Health and Safety Qualifications

CLaSS have now been given centre approval with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and can now offer accredited Health and Safety Qualifications. Click here for further details.

Free Childcare for Training and Learning for Work

Free Childcare for Training and Learning for Work aims to provide registered childcare support for low income families with children, where one parent is working and the other parent (aged 20 or over) is out of work and looking to participate in a learning programme that will lead to work.

This programme will start from April 2009.

Please look out for further bulletins/information in your local learning Centres.
